Anyone know what would be the cause of this distortion.
I had a similar problem about 10 years ago, this is the second one I have seen like this.
This was on a friends Mk 4 cortina, I have emailed him as to the age of the tyre, no answer yet

Hi Roger,
I assume that's it off the wheel. Looks like a bad case of kerbing that has broken some cords.

Quite probable - inflated there will likely be a big bulge in the sidewall.
Hard to tell from a photo, but it could be 'scalloping' - sort of self-explanatory. It usually extends evenly around most of the tyre. Usual cause is a weak strut or shock, the wheel doesn't have to be out of balance to cause this. Ford were one of the earliest to use struts & I seem to recall that their tyres had to be balanced ON the car. A sort of rotating broom spun the wheel - I don't know how the actual balancing was done. _________________ Mike - MVPeters at comcast.net
