I'm a fan of 60's and 70's cars..i like the refinement and to be honest i quite like the speed of cars from that era. I'm one for the "every man" car rather than sports cars although i can understand thier appeal.
A neighbour saw me tinkering with a friends Daimler Dart and told me his Dad had an old car he wanted to sell. I'm not in the position to take on a new car due to space and finances but when i agreed to look at the car anyway little did i know that i would fall for the car enough to instantly agree to buying it..i will need to sell a few "projects" that have as yet to get off the ground but i'm looking forward to this journey..i have worked on plenty of 50's cars but never actually owned one..so here she is..

She will be coming home as soon as i can create a bit of space and agree on the final price!

Nice find Cool ZA and ZB Magnettes strike me as being good usable 50s cars, with a reasonable turn of pace to make them very practical. Keep us informed Smile

Looks pretty sound, is it? It's just a shame the paint has gone so badly. But nothing a respray can't solve Smile

Is it a runner?

It's a ZB..it's had the engine re-built just before it came off the road..it was running but when i visited (at very short notice) the battery was flat but it turnd by hand.
The bodywork is VERY solid and i could only see one very small patch. The tyres will need replacing and the fuel draining so i'm hoping it will be a running restoration with the paint being done over winter. There are plenty of spares including new wheel cylinders so i will overhaul the brakes before it goes anywhere.

Went to look at one of them years ago, it was for sale local to where we used to live. It was a bit ropey, the worst was inside the rear door shut area, where the inner arch comes down to the sill.

A very usable car even today. Dad had a ZA and I bought one from a friend about 20 years back and used it a lot for the family. I just love the dashboard and instrument style!

With the chrome strip running along the bottom of the bonnet and around the rear wing is this not a Varitone model ...normally finished in two tone paintwork but some in single colour just to confuse matters.

I have an ordinary 1958 ZB which does not have the chrome on the bottom of the bonnet or around the rear wing.

How is this car progressing after all this time.?

If one had to pick an everyday car from the 50's a ZB would be hard to beat, if originality is not a priority , a 2.0l B series lump could be fitted with a ford 5 speed gearbox making the car very usable Very Happy

This car in the photo has a wrap around window,so it is a Varitone model.

True what you say about the car being a good 1950`s usable classic, but not much fun in the winter with heaters and demisters not so good in those days.
Ideal for say April till November though.
A bigger engine and 5 speed gearbox would be most usefull.

You never know what is lurking in a Norfolk farm building.
It had sat unused for about 10 years, the owner purchased it 20 years ago.
Within a week i had it up and running and she passed her Mot without any advisories.
The interior is original and in superb condition.
Great cars to drive.
