Dyne's Self Drive Cars.
Maybe Del Boy and Rodney availed themselves of the car hire service at Dyne's Self Drive Cars (Peckham) during the 1960s, when their Reliant was in for a service? This tariff of car rental charges dates to March 1968 and describes the company's winter and summer car hire rates. So long as you liked Fords you'd be ok, because this small card booklet only refers to Dagenham-sourced machines.

If Del needed a van for a Friday's winter market, he could have popped down to 257 Peckham Rye East and hired a 5-7cwt Anglia Van for £1 15s for the day, subject to a mileage limitation. This rate included an allowance of forty miles, an extra 4d would be charged for every mile over that figure. A Cortina, presumably a Mk2 as illustrated on the cover of this publication, would have cost £2 0s, while a Zephyr 4, a 13 seat Transit, or a 22cwt Transit van, would have relieved you of £2 10s, still with a forty mile allowance. Rates in summer were slightly higher, the van for instance now cost £2 5s for a weekday's hire. If you planned to cover a much greater distance, then unlimited mileage rates are also specified.

Naturally, the hirer would pay for all oil and fuel used. Dyne's were keen to point out that all their vehicles had fitted heaters, something that could well have been quite a luxury to a driver more familiar with driving a pre-war plodder, or a basic-specification car of even quite recent times. All cars also came with A.A. membership, re-assuring indeed despite Dyne's assurances that "... all cars are the latest models, maintained in first class condition by our own garage staff". However, if you planned to take your hire car overseas, you'd need to look elsewhere as Dyne's cars couldn't be taken abroad.

Does anyone remember hiring a car from Dyne's Self Drive Cars, of 257 Peckham Rye East in London? A garage called Dyne's Limited is still listed as operating from this location, but I doubt that they still hire out Ford Zephyrs and Anglia vans ... :-)
