Tin-plate old breakdown recovery lorry
More information on this toy lorry
I'd guess this simple un-powered breakdown lorry dates to the 1940s or early 1950s. Although there is no sign of manufacturer, it is in fact a Tri-ang breakdown lorry. The only other example I've seen of this tinplate lorry had the headlamps snapped off, the vulnerable lamps on mine are slightly bent but I don't dare try straightenening them! The only things missing (I think) are the roof board that would have been mounted on the top of the cab, and string that would have been wound around the rear winch.
Update. Joop in the Netherlands contacted me, with some more information about this Triang toy - it is a W series toy truck, dating as I thought to the 1950s. A number of different bodies were available, including tipper, covered wagon, farm lorry, fire truck, Shell tanker, low loader and army lorry - with gun - to name just a few. More information on the W series Tri-ang toys can be found here on Joop's website.
Measures: 245mm in length.
Colour: red body, black metal wheels
