More information on the Auto Union toy from Dinky
Many ranges of toys from Dinky/Meccano came out in the late 1930s and were continued well into postwar Britain. Shown here are two versions of the streamlined Auto Union record breaking car from the 1930s. The silver postwar car is shown above, and of all variants is the easiest to find, although none are exactly commonplace. I've been to many many toyfairs and these only come along every now and then. The red example is much scarcer, and also dates to the 1950s. Pre-war examples, which can command big money, have a tiny driver within the cockpit, not a feature that was incorporated on later examples.
(Another toy inspired by the pre-war Auto Union is the Renwal Speed King, an example of which can be seen here, in the plastic toy cars section)
Measures: 98mm in length. Approximate value £25-£35 postwar, £85+ pre-war
Colour: various, solid metal hubs, rubber tyres, driver on prewar examples only
