Replacement pedal rubbers were all the rage back in the 1950s. The Holdtite was available for all the leading motor vehicles of the day. Dodgy car dealers would probably replace worn out rubbers on cars they'd be fiddling the mileage on. Worn pedal rubbers would be a giveaway that a car may have intergalactic mileage so nice new ones would be fitted to a car before being clocked and offered to an unsuspecting public.
