The Lucas ignition components.
As supplied by Joseph Lucas Ltd.
In the 40s and 50s most UK cars had electrical components sourced from the so-called Prince of Darkness aka Lucas. Perhaps slightly unfair but electrical gremlins and breakdowns of cars using Lucas products were not unknown. Here they are shouting about successes in motorsport during the 1949 racing season. Bob Gerard got the job done in his ERA on the Isle of Man ahead of Jock Horsfall (ERA) and Fred Ashmore (Maserati). Bob triumphed again in Jersey ahead of ERA creator Raymond Mays. Reg Parnell won the Richmond Trophy at Goodwood in only this circuits 2nd year of use. Prior to being a racing circuit Goodwood was the RAF airfield known as RAF Westhampnett. A little known driver called Stirling Moss did the business in a 500cc Cooper-JAP at Silverstone ahead of a R. Dryden in a Norton powered Cooper. The artwork shows an artists impression of a single seat ERA at speed. |
