H. Mainwaring - West End Garage (Wolseley).

The following letter was sent by H. Mainwaring, proprietor of West End Garage in Brecon, Wales, in September 1946. It was a reference for an employee at the garage, a Mr Eric Williams, also of Brecon. The letterheading tells that H. Mainwaring was the local Wolseley cars agent for the area, and also an authorised Tecalemit service station. Little other information is given, other than the telephone number - Brecon 139, and their address for telegrams - Mainwaring Brecon.
West End Garage, Brecon
A check of the 1949-1950 RAC Handbook shows no mention of this garage, so it wasn't affiliated with the RAC at the time, but it does appear in the 1959 edition, as an agent of MG and Wolseley cars - ie cars of the former Nuffield Organization (by now part of BMC). No address is given though. Perhaps West End Garage was situated in the location now occupied by a Gulf petrol station on Church Street, and called the Gulf West End Service Station? As it happens, this particular petrol station sits directly opposite 30 Church Street, the address of Mr Williams, to whom this letter was directed.
Many more examples of garage-related paperwork can be found in the Motoring Collectables section here at Old Classic Car.
