It had been inconvenient up until very recently to remove the door hinges to get them re-chromed. With the photo shoot looming a thought I ought to get them done so arranged with the platers to have them done two at a time in order that the doors could stay safely on the car.
I removed the top most pair - one from each side, and after putting them inside a padded mail bag I then put that bag inside a second padded bag and taped it up and mailed it off on a Saturday morning from my local post office. On Monday I received an email from the platers telling me that they had received one hinge in two ripped bags. Thank you so much Royal Mail. I now have five of a set of six original matching hinges. If anyone is thinking of mailing anything irreplaceable then please do heed my hard learned lesson and take out guaranteed delivery. The insurance itself isn't that important because many items are all but impossible to value and if given a true value then disproportionately costly to insure.
My brilliant local engineer John, without whom my restoration would have been a lot more difficult can make me a new hinge but he is of course in high demand and it will not be a quick turnaround. GGGGGGRRRRRRRRR! |
Is it naive to suggest that the Postal service could easily trace the route your package took?
There's a Hillman door hinge sitting in a 'Lost & Found' box in a Post Office somewhere. |
I have tried this approach but unfortunately am always directed to Royal Mail's 'claims service' and having started this process quickly discovered that I don't meet the criteria and financial recompense is not what I need. Thank you for the suggestion though |

I think you can buy Chromed replacment hinges undrilled.Possibly from Paul Beck.
I went down this route before repairing my hinges prior to rechroming

Hi Mike,
Unfortunately not chromed and also a different thickness and weight so would not line up with the others without packing out.
Thanks |

By request some images of a few items of automobilia in the workshop. I do have some other nice signs in the garage but would be better shown with the car out. Perhaps at the weekend if the weather is OK.

Also, an image of the hand carved and polished stops for my sliding roof rails. Really easy but made much easier with a band saw which cut the shape very nicely and polisher.

If you're into Automobilia you'll love it, I have a look most nights and it has push a button for the bug of adding to my existing collection of various bits and bobs. _________________ Paul

I also love the Dunlop sign but largely due to it being printed and not enamel is a type that is not that highly prized. |

Not enamel then, so its printed still on tin i presume? Its lovely and its in such good readable condition. I have a couple of signs in my shed but over the years have sold on some that I wish I hadn't😞 _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

That is a nice sign, even dented and chipped etc the colours are still very vibrant.
I had a large double sided Fina petrol sign years back, the condition was superb. I let it go as I needed to fund some work on one of the cars. Shame looking back on it now. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |
