wat is the best way to tackle this. ie what sort of sander and git paper etc

Not an straight answer - it depends what you want to do and what the state of the body is and work done to it!
A sander is only part of the process and may not be even necessary _________________ Rover P2

Theres to many variables to give you a good answer. Personally, I always go down to bare metal, but I know others dont.
I suppose that a lot depends on the quality you want from the finished job, and the amount of work you want to put in. |

True enough Rick, but even if someone else is doing the paintwork, its good to have a bit of knowledge beforehand.
UK's suggestion of a book is probably better than my link. Its always nicer to have a book in front of you instead of a monitor... |
