|
|
Brian's advice is really helpful. I hire out classic cars and we get quite a lot of requests for TV, film and video production work. I love doing them - provided I get paid - because they are always interesting. But they are usually short notice and very few convert from enquiry to reality.
At the risk of repeating Brian, my advice is make sure you cover your costs - don't just do it because it's an interesting day out as it'll usually be a very long day out.
Insist on a pre and post vehicle condition check and obtain written confirmation that the company will rectify any damage and is fully insured to use the car as they intend.
Accompany the car if you can and watch exactly how it is used and who uses it
Check exactly what they intend to do with the car - I have heard of cars being covered in a full body advertising wrap without the owner's permission.
The bottom line is - if your car is a prized possession and you'll worry about anyone else driving it or the slightest risk of damage, don't do it.
Our Jaguar Mk2 was recently used in a music video, which is on Youtube here:

Possibly due to my showbiz connections, I was approached by Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics once to supply a 'continental' caravan, i.e. one with the access door on the right hand side. He had woken one morning and decided to be a famous film producer. He made a film starring All Saints (a pulchritudinous female beat combo popular some years ago).
I was paid quite handsomely as great recompense was required for my having to spend a day being wined and dined in an Oxfordshire field (pretending to be in France) watching the Appleton sisters cavort semi-naked around my caravan. |

|

From the early 1960's up to the late 1980's I was often approached with regard to hiring out my Austin 16/6 for film work.
The good news is that: It can be good fun, it can pay well, you get to mix with the 'stars', you eat well, you get a free haircut if they use you to drive your car and pay you for having it cut too. and of course you get extra money if you drive in shot as an 'extra'.
The bad news is that: As already mentioned, to 'them', your pride and joy is just a prop. Accidents can, and do happen, you have to be on set or location very early, you are kept hanging about all day and tend to fit your cameo role towards the end of the day. and if, as it has happend to me on several occasions, the car breaks down, then believe me they do not see the funny side of it!
However, If you are asked, do be very careful and only agree if you know the 'agent' or can trust him/her. and finally if you sign up for an agency, don't pay them any money (£100 was mentioned!!) - as they will have your money and need not do anything for you in return. Also, do not let anyone other than yourself or nominated driver drive your car or allow it to be taken on location without you being there with it. Believe me, all these notes are based on personal experiences.
Cheers.
Jim. |

Just shortly before I purchased it, my Rover was used in crimewatch solved, though it only made a very brief appearance as a getaway vehicle for two armed robbers. The programme was shown in September once I'd got the car home. It's a nice little thing to include in its history.
Here's a blurry screenshot from Iplayer of it.

Same here. A couple of my cars are listed, but not had any enquiries.
As Dirty points out companies often approach Clubs, but in my experience this is often last minute i.e. they want a car the following day! _________________ Keef - Sheerness Kent UK
