Copied from a previous thread on another forum back which started in 2005. Seen on Ebay being sold by a mate, I was just in the market for a lunatic project and decided a decrepid old 2a would be perfect. At first my mate refused to sell it to me as it was quite bad but after not selling on Ebay I had it from him. Here is where it was left to collect green slime and cats.
After collecting it I parked it up while I decided what to do with it as it was pretty bad, but the chassis was good, or so I thought, few pokes with a screwdriver found holes but it was repairable. Stripped the body off to make the repairs and painted everything fitting new bolts bushes brakes etc all the way through.
So far so good, at this point I found major rot in the lower part of the chassis, plates welded on looked ok but they were welded to tinfoil thick metal and needed replacing. After more digging a replacement chassis was sourced and everything swopped over, I say swopped very tongue in cheek as it was a nightmare. As the utility body has different mounts to a station wagon I had to cut off and move mounts, had to make brackets and with all this make sure it was all staying the right shape.
This is test fitting the rear tub prior to the chassis swop.
Bulkhead repairs took a while, new footwells both sides, new door pillars both sides, repairs round the vent panel, and on the inside by the hinges. All was going well until I test fitted it befoe welding, I had the engine and gearbox in and this was a bit of luck. I found the chassis was a 6 Cylinder one, the engine sat further back and the bulkhead didnt fit. off it came, out came the engine and box, all the mounts, gearbox crossmember cut off and welded back on in the 4 cylider position, back on with the bulkhead to finish it off.
Once all the problems were sorted I got on with the conversion, main problem being a roof, the doublecab series roof wasn't an easy thing to find as if there are any real ones they are very very rare so I made my own. Extending a truck cab by splitting the roof along the highest part then using a hardtop gutter to make the front and rear join. Rolled aluminium for the top with braces and supports from inside a hardtop. The following are how it looked while I made the roof.
The rest was just assembly, but after being told I was moving house as I was posted back to Lincolnshire I had to get it in a state where it was mobile enough to get on a trailer. This meant all the bits that make it work were missed out to concentrate on steering axles, wheels etc and being in one lump as time was short. I managed and it sat untouched here for months. Just recently I have started working on it again, now its running and has most of the electrics sorted. I have found the colour it will be and have test painted a few bits to see how good the finish will be. I wasnt happy so decided to spray it instead. Pics of it during the build and as it is now.
This started life in jan 67 as a 109 with 3/4 canvas, went through a hard life and eventually was left to rot in a garden. I was in the mood for a crazy rebuild so this was the outcome..... (Paintwork done in 2007)
It was being used almost as intended too..
This is how it looks now but has a 200 Tdi fitted and will be getting tidied up again soon.

Not a chance was a nightmare but worth it in the end. It getting a 2nd rebuild soon as the chassis needs work, gearbox gone, brakes are typical Landrover, few electrical faults etc... _________________ Mick

Dam handsome Truck stuff that Mick. Been wishing I had one. Thing is though, I don’t really need the extra row of seats. There’s only my son and I that go out in my Landy, as the wife don’t like it, but she does have the odd trip out. Throw the dogs in the back and away I go.

They are at work in the later ones, the first ones were at Brize Norton Motor Club, handy perk of being in the RAF they provide you with a workshop _________________ Mick

I flew in and out of Brize Norton while in the army back in the 1970's.
don't really remember a lot about it, apart from landing with loads of kit and taking off again.

Its an easy job, all nuts and bolts except the coolant hoses and intercooler and exhaust. They take a bit more imagination, there are a 100 ways to fit, some good some bad and some are WHAT THE HELL!!!
Looking at yours I would keep it original, I had the same 2.25 diesel in mine but I sold the Landy and the new owner fitted the Tdi badly so its going to get sorted soon. _________________ Mick
