I have a Lucas 418G starter motor with a missing return spring (the flimsy looking one). I have bought a new spring but before I try to replace it, does anyone have any experience in replacing this part? I do not want to get stuck into taking it apart if there are any useful tips I should know. Many thanks.

If your talking about the bendix return spring You need a compressor tool to remove these , theres a small circlip effort at the very end , compress spring , remove clip , remove compressor and all should go well .
Dont even try without the proper compressor tool or you will remove an eyeball or two and do your self a mischief if it goes wrong Shocked

Hi
I think he means the lightweight one.

But it looks like the heavy one and the pinion have to be removed in order to install it.
