Anyone I know will be shaking their collective heads when they see me mention this classic 122S Volvo rally car.
I'd not had an Amazon for a little while,
and when I saw this one advertised, I knew I'd have to go and see it. I'd actually come across this classic Volvo a few years previously, back when I was running
YKA 750J, my dark blue 121. And now here it was being advertised for sale.
More recently the owner who was selling the car used to store it in the same barn that
Bess my Dodge truck used to reside in, so I'd seen this car before (I sold some spares to the owner back c1992).
Needless to say I bought it as a project car, smitten as I was by the rorty performance exhaust, tweaked engine, racy bucket seats and tripmaster etc etc. I knew the body
was a bit shonky, but I thought it was do-able ... however once I'd bought a load of repair panels and towed it over to a garage I know, I found out for certain just how
kippered it really was underneath, main chassis rails and outriggers were all rotten, inner wings front and rear goosed, boot floor manky, so all in all it was a bit of a shame
really .. if I'd not got so many projects on the boil it may have been possible to do it up, but in the end I decided to pass it on via an ebay auction, being bought for spares
by a Canadian guy who stores his 122S rally car in the UK for European historic rally events.
Curiously a year or so later I was given a classic cars video as a birthday present, and what should be the first car on screen, taking part in the autotest, but this self same old
Volvo, in its earlier two tone green/white colour scheme - spooky!
