Stories about your classic cars and vans
I'm looking for interesting stories, personal memories, dodgy deals and fun memoirs relating to motoring in what are now called classic, or vintage, cars. Read more about it here.
1951 Ford Pilot V8 (Whispering Power)
In addition to the Morris Z Van that Garry sent me details of, he also mailed me some details about his very original black V8 Pilot ...
This is one of 22,000 Pilots built in various body styles at
Dagenham Essex between 1947 & 1951. First registered on the 10th July 1951 and sold to Messrs. E. F. Wilson & Son of Cretingham Suffolk. Who kept the vehicle until 24th may 1961 when it was sold to Mr R. G. Waterson of Framlington Suffolk
who in turn sold it to Mr H. R. Court of Canvey Island Essex on the 9th April 1974.
I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, this was a "chance in a lifetime purchase", the Pilot came into my possession on 15th October 2004. Everything on this vehicle is original except for a new set of tyres, and a 12 volt conversion all done by the last owner. The mileage is 75,000 which is genuine in fact it's probably not run in yet!
Engine: 8 cylinder 90 degree V Type 3,622 c.c., Sump capacity 8 pints of sae 30 oil.
Cooling System: Thermo-syphon system, thermostat controlled (Impeller assisted). Water capacity 4.5 gallons.
Overall length: 14ft. 6.75 in.
Overall width: 5ft. 9.5 in.
Overall height: 5ft. 6in.
Weight: 3,192lbs.
This V8 pilot really is a pleasure to drive.
Thanks again for sending details of you car over!
