Move Over!

A book by Russell Brockbank in the 1950s.

Move Over book cover
The book Move Over! was one of several publications that came out in the 1950s and 1960s, featuring the brilliantly funny motoring artwork of Russell Brockbank.

This particular compilation of motoring cartoons was published in 1962, and followed on from the earlier titles Round the Bend, Up the Straight, Over the Line, and Manifold Pressures. The cartoons had originally appeared in Punch magazine, and the weekly motoring magazine The Motor. Brockbank's previous book was some seven years before this collection of brilliant drawings was printed, yet none of his eye for humour had been lost.

Many subjects in the world of motoring are addressed by the deft pen-work of Mr Brockbank, many of which feature the character Major Upsett, a bowler-hatted gentleman of a certain age, who seems to have problems with the modern pace of life - in the 1950s.

Brockbank was born in 1913, and provided artwork for a number of publications, not all motoring related. His association with Punch began in 1939 and continued for over three decades.

Subjects featured within the pages of Move Over! include car accessories, the Mini car, the lady motorist, touring overseas, motor shows, the relationship of the motorist with pedestrians and animals, with motor racing featuring significantly throughout this book also.

Copies of his books can still be found, with specialist book outlets such as Amazon. For more fun stuff, visit the main motoring humour section on oldclassiccar.
