hi everyone.
sorry i havnt been on in ages, its just my internet's not been working! but i have now changed my service provider and now here we are.

anyway...... i have been having murder with flow's (my herald) gears.
for some reason it just will not go into first .
the only way to get it into first is to put it into second then from there pop it into first. very rarely it will go into first no problem but that is very rarely!! and it usually makes that awful grinding noise or a huge CLUNK!

does anyone have any idea what could be causing it? and what i should do to remedy it.

thanks,

mike.

Hi

I remember the reason for this, Total memory block, is it that first is not syncromesh, so selecting second first helps align the gears before selecting first, there is a reason for it, in tractors anyway, but can't remember what. Can someone tell me if I am on the right track?

Cheers

yeah think you might be right buzzy, with all old cars I always nudge 2nd before aiming for 1st, when the latter has no synchromesh. To try for 1st straightaway can make things graunch!! whether thats a sign of a problem with the 'box or not I'm not sure, but something I've always done

On the older cars, first gear is only needed really when starting off, so therefore there isnt much need for a synchro on it. Just come to a full stop, and with the engine ticking over, put it into first. If its really needed when rolling, as you say, go into second, but 'double' into first...

I believe Uncle Joe is right. I remember that in older trucks. We used to call it "granny gear" over here, not regularly used for normal operation. Helpful for pulling tree stumps, or when you get stuck. But second gear was low enough to get an un-loaded truck moving.

On older cars I always put into second then first because even if they have synch on first it usually wears .

Forgive my old, addled brain Exclamation but why is first gear needed if you are rolling? Confused
