As mentioned in my thread about my minis I am stripping paint off my mini's engine bay, however due to the factory primer being quite resistant, I am not bare metalling it all. The question is can I give a coat of etch primer even on the painted areas or do I have to put it only on the exposed metal bits? |

Rather than etch primer, try Epoxy primer. You can leave it for six months then if you wish, without topcoat. _________________ Evans Waterless Coolants

Hi yes I know but I will not be leaving it, it'll get painted the day after with primer and then the day after with the actual colour. Furthermore I already have etch primer on the shelf from a previous project, I am just doing the engine bay on one of my minis so do not need much!
So can I paint etch primer on previous coatings or just on the exposed steel? |

Hi Bob
Etch primer is fine over previous coating, unless there is a paint reaction, so put a blob of etch on the previous coat to test.

hi bob
ive recently used etch primer over some repreped areas where there was a mix of painted and non painted areas. it went on fine after making sure the surface was free from contaminates (panel wiped and degreased)
the etch primer i used was acrylic based however
try it is best

Hi Bob2,
Yes I have just painted over a mix of bare steel and rubbed down paint
with aerosol etch primer, and I have had no reaction (apart from the wifes
reaction ~ she made me hoover all the prep dust off the drive)

I'm only half way through, yesterday I got fed up of sanding and started degreasing the engine instead!
Hey d4b I will not have any sort of reaction then as I am doing it in a lock up away from home |
