I tried changing the rotor arm and the condenser, but it seems to be the coil and if I get stuck in a traffic jam and under bonnet temp goes sky high.

The distributor is a special Delco Remy and I'm using a GT6 rotor arm rather than the original.

Everything is new, which makes it more frustrating.

It is new black rotor arms that become conductive when hot.

New red ones remain as insulators.

This morning spotted a beaten up Austin A50 pickup fitted with a bmc diesel from what I could see or rather couldn't having to drive behind it!! Laughing

I thought it was a Lucas issue where they broke down through the rivet. The red ones don't have a rivet.

My car has a special Delco Remy Distributor made for R-R, so I doubt there's a red rotor arm available.

Yesterday we saw an XK120 DHC on the M4 and two trucks with traction engines as well as a lovely old Rover 75. No pictures sorry.

The rivet doesn't help but my understanding is that the high carbon content in modern replacement arms is the cause of the problem.

I changed th rotor arm and condenser without a result, but switching the coil got me going again.

I've made a bracket to hold the coil to the thermostat housing just behind the fan as they did on later cars.

At present they're bolted to the bulkhead over the exhaust manifold and down pipe in a black car with a 4257cc engine in a traffic jam on a hot day. Three coil failures (one on the Bristol) were caused by faulty Lucas coils. They leaked oil and they were 6 volt ones labelled 12 Volts. The last two were Commercial Itnition, so Powerepark this time.

I saw these three in Battle today:









Now this is really is a beetle in disguise of a 1939 VW Steyr and if you google it you will get some better photos of it. Also it lives in Hastings I think.
