If you had to do a regular trip into a major town or city, say 20 miles each way, 5 days a week, using normal A and B roads (no motorways),

a. Would you buy a classic to do it in?
b. If so, what would you go for?

Rick, 20 odd years ago I used to do a daily drive of about 15 miles each way in my Fiat 500, that I am currently restoring. To the City of London and then Canary Wharf when I moved jobs. I did it for about 4 years.

It could get into gaps in traffic nobody else could, cheap on petrol and always got me home.

It popped a brake wheel cylinder outside The Old Bailey once and left me with no brakes but I drove it home very slowly on the handbrake. Also the throttle cable broke once inside the car but I got a pair of mole grips connected it to the end of the cable and used it as a lever to drive home.

I did have a problem once when it broke down outside Millwall football ground on the night of a home match and a load of fans picked it up and carried it down the road, fortunately they were only mucking around and ended up bump starting me.

I've been retired for ten years, but when I was commuting 21 miles in to work, I always used Classic Range Rovers. In fact, aside from my Volvo 850 "dog van", I've only used Range Rovers for over twenty years.
Some will say that they're not truly classic, but I just love 'em!

I would think an A40 or A55 Farina would be an ideal commuter.Not too unwieldy or thirsty,and reasonable speed if required.Oh,and tough as old boots!
On the other hand,would you drive your precious classic in snow/slush in mid-winter every day?I'd think it would get old(sorry 'bout the pun) real quick.
Come to think of it,if I had to drive it each and every day,it would no longer be special,so might get just as boring as using a modern car I'll get me coat!

I commuted 25 miles into Bristol and Bath a modern car for over ten years and live in the middle of Chesterfield now. I wouldn't want to subject a classic car to stop/start traffic in all weathers - not good for the car, uncomfortable for the driver.
