A couple of people recently have been telling me that the Tax Exemption date is being brought forward from 1st Jan 73 to 1st Jan 74. I haven't read about it so was wondering if the date is going to start rolling?

Yes I think from next year sometime, cars built upto and including 1973 will become eligible for zero-rate duty. No mention of it being a rolling date though.

I own (and have owned for 33 years) an 850 Norton Commando, registered on the 6th April 1974.
You can imagine my pleasure to read the advancement of the Historic tax class by one year.
I contacted the Vintage Motor Cycle Club (they hold the records for motorcycle production in the UK from almost day 1 to the end of NVT), and they confirmed that using the engine/frame/frame id numbers, the bike was made during November/December 1973.
I have just sorned the bike for the winter, but come April next year, I will be applying for change of taxation class, and using the £70+ saved to put petrol in it!
It is nice owning now three olduns, that are free tax!

I think the 'rolling' rumour comes from the fact that when the year is added on, vehicles will be tax-exempt when they are forty years old, hence the hope that might turn into a 'rolling' 40-year exemption. There was nothing in the budget document to suggest it, just those of us with 1976 cars keeping fingers crossed.

Here's hoping as Tike was built in 1974.
