Probably not much help, but they both have Lucas headlamps which was very common on WW2 British motorbikes (although the Matchless with sidecar was taken in 1937 so that rules that out).
Do you know when the one in Italy was taken? Looks very much like a BSA M20 or a Triumph, i've got a book somewhere on WW2 despatch riders bikes so i'll have a flick through sometime soon and see if I can figure out if it's in there.
Actually, looking at the gallery on this site of BSA M20 pics, i'm almost certain it's a beezer http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/ahum/pictures.htm |

This is one from my family album. A friend of my mothers taken sometime in the 20s. It's the only picture I have seen of this particular make. (you might just be able to see the make on the tank; but will you be any the wiser?)

Hi. This is definatly a Norton 16H, probably 633 cc, the army used a lot of these during the war, my dad bought one in 1946 when he came out of the army with a bren gun carrier on it, which he converted into a sidecar. |

Hi. Rick. Glad I have found this site, some very interesting stuff on here, I dont have a bike now, have had quite a few in the past though, Fanny Barnetts, BSA,s B31,s M20. M21. Gold Flash, Ariels and a few others, but haven,t got the bottle now to ride a bike, have a 1972 Austin 1100 auto now in nice condition, which I enjoy tinkering with and going to shows in. I still remember the reg. No. of that Norton, HHA 779, Dad bought it from Copes, Hagley Rd. Birmingham. John. |

Put will put you out of your misery on the mystery bike taken in the 20s: it was a Cedos. it may have been possible just to make out the logo on the tank. Cedos seem to have made quite a range of bikes in the early 20s according to vintagebike.co.uk.
The bike is now on this website along with quite a range of 'Cedos' that I was quite unaware of. |

Tricky one. The silencer pattern and hand change machanism suggest a 'New Hudson'. The gas generator, lights and sidecar suggest it is a 1920s bike, but I do not have any info or photos of 20s New Hudsons.
