Just tried to tax my 1947 car online and got a message telling me i needed a current MoT. I thought it was odd when I got the reminder through the post and it said "an MoT is needed for this vehicle".
I did MoT it last year but it must have recently lapsed.

I've seen the V112 exemption forms. Do they have to be shown each time a disc is applied for? If so, I wonder why we can't just register the car as exempt so it is recorded as such?
If the V112 is needed, I imagine that makes online taxing impossible?

V5C reads:

Date of first registration ......1947
date of first registration in the UK ......2012

Green slip part reads:
Date of manufacture 1947 (declared manufactured 1947)

Taxed my 47 Minx online, no problems without an MOT, I must admit it surprised me not being asked.

Weird. I think i'll just have to use a V112 at the Post Office and hope it's okay next year.

Hi Martin, surely it's something to do with the first reg in UK that's confusing the system

Date of first registration ......1947
date of first registration in the UK ......2012

Maybe a quick call to a DVLA centre would resolve it(if you still have a local centre) Cheers,JD.

Noticed on my renewal form that it stated I needed an MOT even though the form states tax class ‘historic vehicle’ and the V5 has declared manufacture of 1937. Phoned Swansea (didn’t want to know), told to phoned VOSA who said there won’t be a problem, use the V112 when I come to taxing, but I have to do it at a Post Office!

I have a feeling it’s going to be an interesting visit.

That's exactly the same situation as me then.
Probably some spotty erks ineptitude at Swansea.

I've been told that of you tax online and just tick the box to say you have an MOT, you're automatically taxed.

I think I did it with my TR3A, but I can't remember if the previous MOT had run out or not.

It's far easier and quickly to tax online.

No, that's not the case. There is no box to tick, you just get the message "Your vehicle requires a valid MoT" as the system check automatically and knows there isn't one.

It is far easier yes, that's why I'm hoping to sort this out.

I have spoken to a human being at DVLA today, and he told me there are a few glitches with the MoT exemption thing. He said I'd have to use a V112 at the Post Office this time, but hopefully by next year it will be sorted out. To be honest I don't hold much hope and fully expect to be in the same boat next year.

Agreed its much easier, but every car taxed online is another nail in the coffin for your local Post Office!

I had the same saga a bit back and completed form V112 at the post office in front of the Clerk, who glanced at it and returned it to me with my other documents and then issued the tax disc. No record was kept!
It does give me a bit of pleasure renewing at the village PO knowing that they are getting paid to do it and it not costing me anything though!

I, personally, would still want to MOT the car, regardless of whether or not I had to!!
