Photos of the crane I did for the workshop, but it may be a useful design for others to copy.

I just knew that one day I WAS going to drip that 4-jaw chuck and break something - chuck or bones!
It spans the lathe and the two milling machines, so now easy to get heavy stuff on and off.
Geoff - Bent a shaft in lathe, so Apron is in pieces right now. _________________ Too many hobbies, not enough time!

Hi Geoff,
When I had my garage built I had always used overhead beams when I needed to lift an engine out so I thought it would be nice to specify something a bit more beefy than a roof joist. (Perhaps I went a little O.T.T. )
Anyway, that was 17 years ago and whilst I've had many engines in and out in that time I've only used the beam once trying to get a reluctant cylinder head off.
The reason being that almost immediately after completing the garage build I bought an SS Jaguar (less body) and the guys delivering it came with a mobile crane that enabled every major part including the not insubstantial chassis to be trundled up my driveway. I was instantly hooked and acquired a mobile shortly thereafter.

Peter,
That RSJ will lift a tank!
Nothing to beat those engine cranes.
I have a 2-tonner that I used to move the machines into the garage and get them into position. Could never have managed without one.
I do have a traditional block & tackle slung from one of the carport steel beams, that just happens to be in the correct position to lift engines out.
Geoff - Back from hospital, X-Ray and Cystoscopy. Now relaxing. _________________ Too many hobbies, not enough time!
