Contrary to the weak mixture theory. A rich mixture will pass into the exhaust partly unburnt for lack of sufficient oxygen. Fresh oxygen leaking in often causes a BANG!

Fully agree. Years ago I was a mobile Plant Fitter and had the use of a petrol engined ex-military Land Rover. It frequently emulated a shotgun within several seconds of being switched off.
I well remember pulling up to the pumps at a motorway service station, switching off and walking round to the pump. BANG! Several people were sufficiently startled to duck!
I knew even then what caused it but found it entertaining so did nothing about it.
