I wiped on some stuff called Gibb Brand which according to the internet cures all ills. It has some effect, the odd bit I missed went brown very quickly.
When I get round to painting I'll follow your advice and acid the whole thing again. This process is such a lot of labour it would be a shame to spoil it at that stage
