I still use VHS Video Cassettes, much easier than these new fangled DVD things and I recorded 2 episodes of the Homeland series on C4.
I watched both last night and let the cassette run and to my surprise found a 1999 edition of Top Gear on the last hour of the tape.

Clarkson and Quentin Willson were examining the then new Rover 75 and Jaguar S Type.

Both new cars were unveiled at more or less the same time and I remember thinking then that the Rover was the more handsome and classy looking of the two AND with a nicer interior.

My opinion hasn't changed in the ensuing 14 years and I still consider the Rover 75 as the nicer car.

Both will be classics, probably.

i did like the rover when it was new but i still think the jag is a lovely car.
a collegue has a top spec one that he had from new, twin turbo set up..lovely and rapid!

That brown/beige interior is hideous - pity as it spoils the Rover totally for me.

The Rover's ok but not for me (the MG ZT-T 260 estate I wouldn't mind). I had a ride in an S-Type V6 and wasn't that blown away by it, but the facelifted 4.2 V8 does appeal - especially the Type R.

Depends on the exact model, as always.
If I would want a 75 it would have to be the top spec V6 2.5 just for the fun of it. The diesel may be practical / cheaper to run but that is not what the Rover or Jaguar is about.
Only the versions before the facelift of around 2003 / 04, I don't like the newer face and rear.
Estates are very nice as well!
MG versions are wrong, lost the chrome which balance the car so nicely.

The other way around for the S-type, the pre-facelift version had a too cheap looking rear end, the post-facelift was much better.
I would search for the 4 litre V8, again no diesel.

Last summer I briefly considered a 75 and also a S-type to have as a modern car in our household but chickened out because of the vulnerable electronics and dependency of modern garages for servicing.
Instead I bought a Subaru 6 cylinder - I have more faith in the reliability and cheap servicing of the Sub (having owned a 15 year old Sub for 7 years, an accident wrote it off regrettably).
