Why is it that traders who deal in vintage car parts ask ridicolous prices for there goods.tyres for example.how on earth can a skinny crossply be as much as a wider radial.its got to be about pure greed.theyve got the part.they know you need it.hence they can ask what they want.its never been about profit for me.im on my 3rd resto now.done a spitty.then a moggy now a pop103e..its more of an hobby for me and the fact its good to take and old run down car.restore it and put it back on the road.its just a shame that some traders dont see it the way i see it because all of us would be better off.i know nothing can be done about it but dont it just p*** you off.??

Well that's what I thought when I found out how much my tyres would cost.
However, the last time I bought old car tyres was in 1985. 3.50 by 19's were £25 and now they are £58.
http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/education/Pages/inflation/calculator/flash/default.aspx
According to that, they should now be £64 with inflation, so they are actually cheaper.
I suppose it depends on demand too.

Crossplies must be made in relatively small batches nowadays, I'm surprised how good availability is - but yes the price can be eye-watering.

Worst price I received for a set of tyres to fit my '20s Dodge was, including VAT, in the region of £1300-1500 or so... Shocked Still, better that than nothing and the car sitting on jacks in the garage I suppose.

It may be frustrating, but frankly it a very naive view to expect comparable pricing. Modern tyres probably outsell classic by 1000 to 1, economies of scale and fast turnover mean modern parts are bound to be considerably cheaper.

By way of a comparison, I've today had new tyres fitted to the MGA; the tyres on it weren't worn, in fact they had only completed about 400 miles, but they were 21 years old and the car had stood for long periods, not a good thing for tyres, so I changed them to be on the safe side.

So on the 3rd of October 1992 I had 4 Kelly 165 15's fitted at a cost of £33.55 each.

On the 15th of November 2013 they were replaced by Toyo 165 15's at a cost of £55.00 each.

If I plug £33.55 into an inflation calculator it churns out £58.82, so no real difference in cost Smile
