According to the BBC's news web page http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-25223631 The humble paper tax disc is to be scrapped as early as October next year. According to the report it will enable people to pay monthly via direct debit. I wonder how that affects those of us with vehicles exempt from the duty but still have to display a valid disc with 'Historic Vehicle' and 'Nil Value'

Another way for 'Big Brother' to keep an eye on us and our details

According to the report it will make the car tax cheaper. I'm sure we all believe that.
Just another way the government get to keep tabs on us.

Some cynical posts here!

WHY do the Government NEED to keep "tabs" on us?

NOT ON ME though!

But there are so many of us on whom they do need to for the benefit of the rest of us.
THOSE people are the ones we should criticise because we all suffer from their activities!!

Jim.

Yes, I'm not sure how giving the option of paying monthly by direct debit and not having a paper disc equates to being kept tabs on any more than the reason they're doing away with the disc (improvements in ANPR technology) does. And I can't see why those lucky enough to get free road tax will be any different - surely the requirement to display will go for them, too.

I suppose it does mean that we can legally display a period tax disk? the bar coded modern disks do look odd on an old vehicle.

How long, do you think, will it be before you have to show your insurance and MOT details on your windscreen?

Perhaps that will be no bad thing

In Eire details such as insurance are shown with the tax discs

Ref paying monthly by direct debit, it may make buying a car, where the owner currently pays VED on a monthly d/d a bit fiddly. Presumably the seller and the new owner will have to synchronise when the former cancels his/her d/d, and the new owner kicks their's off. Maybe we'll get used to it, like we do already for insurance.

Will it be possible to easily tax a car for say just one month, then cancel the d/d again before month 2? That could be handy if so.

Just to follow up my previous question, from reading around it'll still only be possible to choose either 6 months' or 12 months' tax, when paying by d/d. Quite what happens if you cancel the d/d part way through the period I'm not sure, I guess it must be possible, as it is now.

I quite like the idea of monthly direct debit payments rather than the one off payment. Also, reducing the premium for 6 months over buying 12 months from roughly 10% to only 5% is quite good.

I renewed the tax on one of the old'uns at the post office and the lady gave me a receipt for £0.00. With a straight face I gave her a cheque for exactly the same amount. It was worth it for the look I got! But turning to the point in question, how do you pay £0 monthly?

I think I'll find a tax disc or replica of one contemporary with the age of the car and display that instead. Cool

At last I'll be saved the trouble of finding a beer bottle decal the right colour each year.
