I always had a bit of a soft spot for the SDI,they promised so much but ultimately delivered little. I remember my first drive in a brand new one and thought it a rather splendid car, unfortunately it proved very unreliable almost from day one and the bodywork rusted as fast as the windows leaked. _________________ Thirty years selling imperial hand tools for old machinery(Now happily retired). |

The build quality was well up to the standard required by the Unions. They weren't even painted all over and the V8 engine that was bulletproof in the old Rovers had numerous problems in SD1s.
In the seventies I worked opposite a BL dealer and saw the sort of crap that was being delivered. I remember an Allegro with fuel pipes, petrol tank, that was part of the boot floor, just thrown in the boot and also there only being one engine mount attached. It couldn't have been driven anywhere. The dealer was required to fill in a form stating all problems, so when the rep came they tackled him about the appalling state of the cars and the time they spent form filling. His reply was that if they told the work force, they'd walk out.
I had Special Branch friends tasked with following KGB spies over here masquerading as Shop Stewards and winding up our idiots. I wonder sometimes if people remember just what a mess this country at that time.
Needless to say the true situation was never fairly reported by the BBC. |
