Hi all,

I'm back on my caravan restoration again but need some help. It's a 1948 Coventry Knight and is is fine structural condition a fairly complete inside too.

All is going well in most ways but the rims I bought it with are old Land Rover ones which are; a) not as pretty as the originals, and b) not a deep enough dish so the tyres rub on the caravan body wheel arch.

The ones I need look like this:

Apparently they're called 'easy cleans' and were quite common in the 40's & 50's. I need 5 stud 16" ones if anyone knows of any for sale?

With that info + Brian we might be onto something. I'm no expert on wheels but would say those rims are possibly dished the opposite way from the way I need, I'm looking to get the tyres further away from the inside arch and these are perhaps dishing further over the drum & nearer the body? Or am I wrong? I hope I am.

if you can find the right centres a good fabricator/welder should be able to reposition them or fit them to suitable rims.

What Land Rover wheels are you using? If you have ended up with series 1 or 2 LWB wheels they will have a wider flange on the inside than the outside (about 2 inch on the inside). If so track down some series 3 or 110 rims which have the wider flange on the outside - effectively giving a wider track and thus moving the tyre further from the inner arch.

Interesting. The wheels came with the van and I know absolutely nothing about Landrovers but I can have an ask.....

If you are sure you have Land Rover wheels fitted I’ll add the following:
There are several types of standard Land Rover wheel, but I suspect you have one of the very readily available types which in size terms will either be SWB or LWB. The type of construction is age dependant, but essentially they are the same size for each version respectively. Squinting at your photograph it looks to me that you already have the LWB wheel fitted which is the deeper dish of the two. A better photograph of the wheel will confirm this plus you could also supply the numbers which will be on the flat area between the studs. If you are on LWB wheels you could fit wheel spacers assuming you know what you are doing – they are not cheap though!

Note also that Land Rover wheels have quite a large stud hole so wheel nuts of 1 1/16” will be required. Anything smaller could rip off – I’ve seen this happen on early SWB Land Rovers with LWB wheels fitted!!!

I think we have a very satisfactory solution in the pipeline.......
A friend has come up with some incredibly rusty original CK rims, which although are dangerously thin where the tyre meets the rim are, apparently, still able to be used for the centres only and new rims fabricated to them.
Fingers crossed for a safe outcome & thanks to all for suggestions.

Yes please Stevie. Sad to hear of a CK going that way but these things do happen I guess. I'll PM you to sort some details. I might want a few other bits too, plus I know a few others out there restoring CK units.
