|
|
A few years ago I wanted to transfer a number plate from one of our vehicles to another.
I went along to my local DVLA office one Monday morning with the forms, whilst there the assistant asked the inspector who was in the office to speak to me about my query, an appointment was made to inspect our car a few day`s later ( Wednesday).
On the Friday of the same week we received a letter telling us of the new number for our car, plus permission to put the original number on our other car.
Job done....great.
In January of this year we decided to do the same with another vehicle we own.
But this time the local office has shut down through cost saving by the government.
I made sure the car was MOT`d, filled in the required forms and posted them off to DVLA Swansea.
A month later we recieved a letter stating that an inspection of our car was required by VOSA.
A week later a letter arrived to say could I phone a premium rate number to arrange a date for the inspection.
I was told VOSA were very busy and they could inspect the car in about ten day`s time.
We are still waiting for the inspection to be carried out.
And then for VOSA to contact DVLA at Swansea.
Then DVLA Swansea to contact us saying we have the original number plus permission to register our other car with a new number .
I do not think this is good enough....but there is nothing I can do about it.

My wife has a personal plate so we have moved it from car to car, the transaction was always completed there and then at the DVLA office, who would issue a new tax disk, then simple case of going home and swapping the plates, no inspection required.
This is the sort of straight forward transaction that I thought they would move to Post Offices (wasn't that what was stated as part of the announcement ?)...anyway I don't think the PO's do any more than they did previously, and all the online services promised seems to consist of; download and print this form, now put it in an envelope and send to Swansea !
Agree GF its not good enough!

The pleasures of centralisation, and the V765.
You may be tax exempt, but you can now see where the money savings went! _________________ KA

There is no problem with them not receiving my documents.
I phoned after not hearing anything for a few weeks and was assured that they were dealing with the matter and a case officer was working flat out to process my application.
What makes this a drawn out procedure now is I have to send all my paperwork to DVLA, the DVLA write to me after receiving the documents, I then have to phone VOSA for a vehicle inspection, they then examine the vehicle after a week or more, they then write to DVLA telling them the car exists and is OK, then DVLA writing to me to say I can transfer the number to another of our vehicles. PHEW!!!! Did you get all that.
As mentioned before, this normally took a week.
I am dreading having a USA import vehicle registered over here by the new system in the next month or so.....I think I will need a lie down afterwards.

| Two local club members have recently registered American imports with no problems. They made sure all the paperwork was correct first and it all went through in just over a week. No inspections. The one was a 1950 and they didn't even ask for an M.O.T which the owner was expecting as a new registration |

There certainly is!
I am fighting a £75 fine for not notifying them of change of ownership on a car I sold. They deny receipt of the V5C slip, even though I sent it by recorded delivery and I have a signature in my possession! |

It would be so useful if these sort of documents could be checked and handed over at a PO counter, just like they do for passports

Trouble is it would depend on the staff in the individual post office. Where we live we have a choice of two - one is a little closer, but you have to park on the yellows, while the other has a big free carpark just over the way. I always go to the nearer of the two and risk a parking ticket though, as the staff are excellent and really know their job - go in the other one and it's like watching the Chuckle Brothers at work |
