hi all
there are new rules later in the year on road tax
from october if you buy a vechicle that has tax on it
the tax remains with the previous owner so
you will have to tax it before you take it away or trailer it
dont forget about sorn as that stays with the last owner to
any way the free road tax has started rolling again 40 year rule now applies

Hi
Unless it is currently off road without SORN, even if you trailer it you will need to tax or SORN it because of the requirement for continuous tax.

So, if the tax remains with the seller, does that mean he can transfer it to a new purchase?

no as far as we know at the moment the tax has to be cashed in
thus the seller loses a month and the new owner the same
a win win for our good old dvla
its a ploy to make sure that you don't but a car under an alias and drive out the tax with no insurance

They both can't loose a month? I think the government will gain up to a month additional revenue each time a vehicle is sold, but if it assists keeping uninsured toe rags off the road, I happy with it Smile

As I also understand it, tax discs are being withdrawn as they are now no longer necessary with the computer records, so it may be a day-to-day cost.

It's not a ploy in any shape or form; it's a policy intended to reduce the number of uninsured cars on the road and is long overdue.

Anything that takes uninsured vehicles off the road has to be a good idea.

On a similar note, the insurance on my Hillman Minx ran out approx. 3 weeks ago now and as the car is in secure storage I decided to have a good look round for better insurance. In the meantime I have had a letter from MID stating that as the car is uninsured I will get a £1000 fine unless I do something immediately!

Of course by now the car is insured again but it just struck me how quickly it was jumped upon and the how quick I got the letter.

When this started I posted on some instructors sites and also in my monthly trade paper column, that it seems to be aimed at stopping private sales and promoting trading-in.
For the 1 car owner:-
If you buy before you sell you have to have 2 policies going at the same time and probably not get your NCD on the new car.
If you sell first you aare without a vehicle and possibly unable to get around to as many possible purchases to inspect them.
If you take the car you are selling off the road and declare it SORN you can cease the insurance but then a potential purchaser cannot road test it.

True, but what are the chances that a potential purchaser would be properly covered to drive it anyway? Now that insurance seems to require every driver to be named (or it seems that way from the various 'Traffic Cops' programmes) the old option that covers people third party on someone elses vehicle seems to have gone away.
