Just to hijack this a bit......
I brought some bottles of automec, as I have completely replaced the brake system and it will be a rarely used low power car, it seemed ideal.
However I am now paranoid more about the problems that silicone can cause when painting.....if you believe the internet (and who wouldn't!) Just having filled the reservoir can cause adhesion issues.................I don't want to have to paint the car before I can test the brakes.
Any thoughts? |

Hi
The internet is full of drama queens seeking attention!
Silicon is a pain when painting, mainly because it's in so many polishes. The panel wipe that your painter will use is designed to get rid of it, and there are anti silicon additives for paints if you think it's going to be a real problem.
You just need to take care when filling the reservoir, as you would with any brake fluid, and keep it off the paintwork. If some does get spilt on the paintwork, clean it off with copious amounts of panel wipe, and advise the painter so that he can give it an extra clean or use some anti silicon.
Cheers

I will be to the un-talented individual having a pop at painting!
I guess I will have a chat with the Guy in the paint shop, but do you know if standard panel wipe actually removes Silicone?..There is limited data on the can and the paint guy is Good but a bit light on data sheets!
I have been careful with polishes around the car, you just get stories about silicone vapours getting onto panels?!
It's difficult to know what to believe......especially as I have a hunch that some 'contamination' people claim to see must surely be problems with the compressor system (oil/water vapour)?!!?
I would like to use the brake fluid, but not if it causes me painting woes?! |

Hi
UPOL system 20 panel wipe makes some specific claims regarding silicon removal, I have used it on bare metal and paint and it seems to do what it says on the tin.
Data sheet here: http://www.u-pol.co.uk/documents/datasheets/tds/S2000-TDS-US.pdf
I'm sure there are other wipes that are just as good, your local paint shop should advise.
Cheers
