Ok folks, a few tasters of the stuff we stumbled across while driving around. Our drive was around the North, covering places like Viseu, Coimbra, Sintra, Caiscais, Estoril, Lisbon and places inbetween, taking in back roads wherever possible. Our hire car was a 1.3 Suzuki Swift TD - sipped the fuel and drove quite nicely, although you had to row it along on the gears a bit. Driving on the wrong side was exciting too, and the impatience of some Portuguese drivers was amazing and made UK 'white van man' drivers look like amateurs Smile











The black saloon was a mega original Pug 403 saloon.
The grey pickup was a Pug 404, one of several we spied over the 12 days.
The jet was spotted in a yard/garage at the side of a main road.
The assortment of cars behind locked gates were possibly for sale, and include a Simca Aronde pickup, a Light 15, Fiat Topolino, and others.
The flat maroon car under a tree is a Renault Juvaquatre, c1936.
The rusty car photographed in grass was an Opel Rekord, discreetly photographed in a yard that had many interesting old relics in it, including the Minor.

We spotted lots of older garage buildings, most amazing (to us anyway) was the Garagem Atlantic, seen in Aveiro and still used for car servicing. Inside were some old signs including one for a Citroen SM, which suggests that it was once a Cit dealership perhaps.

Added: a photo of the E83W that we spotted has been added in that section!

Didn't know that they drive on the "right" side of the road in Portugal.

Whilst there are logical reasons to drive on the left hand side of the road, I've never heard of any for driving on the right.... Laughing

Does anyone know of any (for the right, that is!)

aye dad and I have a cockpit section of a Fairey Gannet, its with an ATC squadron on long term loan (!). Lid's up for the jet idea although doesn't think one will fit Smile

Hi

I think you should go for it then! I don't really like mr clarkson, but remember watching him being filmed at his house, where a harrier jump jet (or simmilar) was dropped off at the end of his drive, he then towed it up the grass by the side of his drive and when it got to by his house it was about 2 foot in the ground, his wife then came home and all hell broke loose! hehe

Yup I remember watching that, it was a Lightning that he had although I don't think he kept it for long - last I read somewhere was that it was looking tatty stored somewhere or other (in new ownership).

The Lightning would be my fave option too, but they are big old things and wouldn't fit here sadly Sad

I'd love a Lightning, and a Vulcan!! If you won the lottery, you could save BAe Woodford's Vulcan from the scrapman, who is due to arrive shortly, and if you fancy a Lightning...

I'd heard that the Vulcan at Woodford was looking a bit shakey, whats the latest on its condition/future ?

Clarkson's Lightning, XM172, is now being lovingly looked after at Sparks Bridge in Cumbria, along with a couple of other Lightnings. Incidentally, the lads I know at nBruntingthorpe are fast taxying their two Lightnings this Sunday, 22nd July 2007 at Bruntingthorpe Aerodrome in Leicestershire. Entry is £12.00 per person and there will also be a Canberra carrying out a couple of runs too. You will also be able to visit the hangar where XH558, the worlds only (soon to be) airworthy Vulcan Bomber is being restored to flight.

It is a good day out and it is the Lightning Preservation Group's only income so, gents, if you fancy it...

I'll be making the trip in the new motor I reckon... Wink

I don't think she's got very long left Rick, they are currently recovering as many spares as they can before she is destroyed. The cockpit's future is secure, two of the engines are going to XM655 at Wellesbourne and a lot of other parts have been secured by The Vulcan Operating Company, XH558's custodians. Hopefully, 603 @ Woodford will be nothing but a bare carcass when she meets her end... Sad

Wonder if any photos can be got of it before and during the stripdown?? I have happy memories of oggling it at many Woodford airshows over the years Crying or Very sad
