So last year when I went to tax Tilly (free) online I wasn't able to as she didn't have an MOT. When I called the DVLA helpline I was told that I had to tax it at the post office or my local DVLA centre, so I ambled up to the PO and filled in the relevant paperwork and received my free road tax.

Today a year later and my renewal came through the door, my initial thought was 'oh no, here we go again' but my fears were soon dismissed when I went online, filled in my reference number and everything went straight through without incident. Just need to wait a few days now for my disc to appear through the door.

It always gives me a certain pleasure to amble into the local village PO to tax the Jowett. Postie gets paid a pittance to do it but it costs me nothing!
I really can't understand why if you tax a modern there though, you need to arrive with a sheaf of paperwork whereas, as 47p2 states, you can do it on line by just entering a reference number. Why can't this facility be available to the POs? Eliminates any risk of forged MOTs or insurance documents

If I ambled to the local PO I would have to stand in a line for half an hour . In Australia it is all done on line. The mechanic puts the " MOT " on line and the insurance does the same. When the RTA sees this has been done, then you can pay for your rego. on line by credit card . Easy !

I wondered about that Confused .......

It's because to give every single post office secure access to the relevant bits of the DVLA systems is a major IT project , it's obviously technically possible as we can check our own MOT and insurance on line. I suspect that when it is introduced the local PO's will be able to offer more of the services that we were promised when the local DVLA local office closures were announced.

It's just a shame they closed the offices before getting the PO's up to speed Shocked

I must admit we carry out most operations connected to DVLA on line.

When I used to go and tax my vehicles at a busy main road post office in my lunch break I always ended up behind people getting paid out lots of money for doing nothing.

When I left the post office to go back to a hard afternoons work it left a bitter taste in my mouth.

I have found another rural post office nearby that suits me better.

I wouldn't hold out much hope. I live in Chesterfield, a town of approximately 75,000. Our main post office was moved recently from its own dedicated premises to a corner of WH Smiths with four assistants instead of the previous 10.

Suppose you are lucky. Our main Post Office is upstairs in WH Smith with no lift. I am in a wheelchair.

When I went to tax both the classic and my modern everyday at the beginning of last month I went to the post office with all the usual documents and was told that other than my MOT exemption form I didn't need any of them as it's all checked online. Result. Hope it's as smooth when they do away with the paper tax disc later this year and I'll do it on line.
