It is funny....before we got high tec and had Sky installed there were very few programmes on the TV about Classic Cars.

A good series some years ago featured John Peel narrating a programme which featured British Classic Cars of the 1960`s.

Then there was a programme called Veteran and Vintage made by Anglia TV.

That was about it.

Now on Sky we have...

Counting Cars.
Fast and Loud.
Desert Car Kings.
Car SOS.
Chasing Classic Cars.
Extreme Car Hoarders.
Ultimate Machines.
Car Chaser.

Too name a few.

This week in Classic Car Weekly they reviewed another five programmes that will hit the airwaves in the next month.

Is this going to be like before the Banking Crisis, when you could not turn on the TV without someone telling you an IT Computer Clerk who could not change a plug fuse was an overnight property developer with sixteen Buy-To-Lets in Brighton.
Sarah Beeney has a lot to blame for this hype.

And Amanda Lamb made everyone purchase that £20,000 bargain pigsty in Bulgaria, because the property bubble had so many patches on it busting was unthinkable.

Now we have overdose Classic Car hysteria...Quentin Wilson will be telling you that a 1980`s Jaguar XJS that a few years ago only a fool would purchase at an auction, is all of a sudden better an investment than those Gilt Edge Bonds.

I remember in the late 1980`s people coming to work and telling everyone that their house had gone up £5,000 since last week....then CRASH.!!!


Hope Classic Cars do not do the same in a few years time when the interest rate goes up.

So remember...only pay £1,000 for that car valued in your head at £1,000...not £2,000. Then you will not get your fingers burnt.

Fortunately we've not gone down the Sky route (live F1 would be nice, but ah well).

Yes there are plenty of series to choose from, but are they any cop? The John Peel series was good and we recorded them all. Salvage Squad was ok too. The rest that have come along I can take or leave tbh, occasionally I watch the one on Freeview about the US place buying and selling muscle cars and hot rods, that can be ok, and I did quite like American Hot Rod although the disputes between staff got pretty wearing.

Rather than the series, I much prefer the one-off documentaries on motoring and motorsport, that pop up on BBC4 and elsewhere from time to time. I had a free TV evening a week or so back (!), so sat down to watch a documentary about British motorcycles (that I recorded last year some time), and also a couple that featured 1950s racing using contemporary BBC archive footage, with Raymond Baxter etc.

Here in Denmark we dont have ONE single program regarding Classic cars

But we have ALL sorts of STUUUUUPID food & cocking programs

and when they are not on, we have some "great" reality tv programs

Well perhaps - some one-offs are good but others can be puerile and made for entertainment rather than informative.

I liked the old BBC 2 Wheelbase (particularly Gordon Wilkins and his out down for the new Austin Allegro and its square steering wheel in 1972, and its less staid successor Top Gear the latter being nothing the current effort which is just as rubbish as the reality/cooking programmes referred to.

I will look out for these though the Fuzz Townsend ones are not too bad

PS I did quite like the Allegros even though the build and plastics quality was terrible. Used to drive a number of them hired from Kennings along with the even worse Marina's and Toledo's as the firm I worked for did not encourage its staff mots of whom could only afford old bangers to drive around the country with other staff as passenger

I loved the John Peel commentated classic car program's. I thought they were the best ever because they concentrated on how much the cars meant to their owners.

On another subject, I won't pay for Sky, I resent the £5 Billion a year and Marxist BBC and I can't stand adverts, so I have a £99 box called and Apple TV and I pay £5.99 a month for Netflx, which gives me all the TV program's you can imagine, thousands of movies and I can watch as many as I want when I want with no adverts, no celebs and in 42 mins instead of an hour.

iTunes has all the latest TV program's and blockbuster movies and YouTube and Vimeo more stuff on engines, cars, planes that you could ever imagine.

I hardly ever watch broadcast TV now, but I have the best TV ever.

Sound quality and picture are better too, except some YouTube.

Cannot recall the name but there are regular reruns of the ones with Ed China and Mike Brewer in and these are quite entertaining even though some of the more awkward bits are speeded up/left out
