Hi I am sure somebody on here has had dealings with this before but I am not sure of the process?

My car has been off the road since 1997, so before SORN existed. It's a 1966 so tax exempt which it states on the V5. Obviously I can't apply for a tax disc until I get it MOT'd. I can get insurance but will it be valid to drive to the garage for the MOT with no valid MOT or Road Tax?

I have a V5 for the car but not the newer version V5C, do I need one of them before I apply for the tax disc?

Anyone recommend a good Classic Car insurance company for limited mileage. I used to use Footman James but haven't done so for a while.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Tony
It is legal to drive a vehicle to a pre booked mot without an mot or VED. You still have to ensure that the vehicle is roadworthy and could be prosecuted for any defects, in the same way that someone with a valid MOT could. You would be more obvious to the police as the technology in police cars these days will pick up an unlicensed vehicle.

I now use Peter James insurance, the same chap who founded Footman James, before he sold it.

Having just done my Singer, which had been off the road since 1985, I insured it (with Peter James as it happens) pre-booked the MOT and once that was successfully done, popped round to the post office to collect the tax disc..
I was at the post office with an hour of the MOT and their system already showed the MOT result.
Only slight difference was that my V5 didnt show the car as being Historic so that needed noting and signing at the post office and they then sent it to the DVLA for changing

Cheers Kev. Did you have the original V5 or the newer V5C I think the V5C came in somewhere in the mid 2000's. I think they just sent you a new one for moderns?

mine was the v5c as i had to apply for a change of owner last october. It came back to me with PLG as the taxation class as thats what it was in 1985 when last on the road

Ok thanks Kev. I think I will need to get a V5C before they will give me a tax disc. Apparently I looked on DVLA and you can request one over the phone, probably once you get through, there is something about having to pay £26 which to me is plain wrong if I have to, seeing I have the original V5.

Hi, the blue(outer cover) version of the V5 was replaced by red version at DVLA's instigation so I would think you can get a new one for free.

Mine for my classics came automatically. I can also recommend Peter James Insurance - I have both cars on one policy with them at reasonable cost.

Information is not held about the cost to the environment. However, the estimated
additional cost of issuing the new V5C is £5.5m. An estimated extra 19 million documents
will be issued over the 12 month exercise triggered by the re-licensing of the vehicle or receipt of a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN). Documents received for a change of keeper or address (for example) will receive a replacement V5C in the new format as a matter of course.

Everything has moved on now day`s with computer technology.

All your vehicle records are listed on one data base.

To tax a vehicle online is a doddle.

If you have a vehicle or just purchased a vehicle with an old style log book send in the old one, make sure they change the class listing to Historic.

If purchasing a vehicle that has been barn stored for many years just check on the DVLA database that it is still registered or it will cost you £25.00 + the help of an owners club to get the number kept with the car and to register it.

I take vehicles for MOt`s that have been off the road sometimes for 25 years or more.

As long as they are booked in and you have insurance cover that is fine.
Peter James will insure a vehicle using the chassis number.

If I do not want to insure a vehicle for one reason or another I trailer it to the MOT station.

I noticed last Friday that Eurotunnel have access to all your vehicle records.
You just give the vehicle registration number and they know everything about you, even your inside leg measurement.
