Well his nose looks too sharp for Caracciola and Dick Seaman's nose turns up at the end. It must be von Brauchitsch?

Not von Brauchitsch, you were closer with your first guess.
Rosemeyer drove for the same team, as this guy.
Ferdinand Porsche named him the best driver of all times.
They also made a song about him.

So am I about 10 years and 15 stone later?

I think the engine is from Harry Miller's stable.

Same guy on the right?

I think the guy holding the engine in the first photo is Fred Offenhauser who took over from Harry Miller.

hi Peter,

tried to search for info, found out that Nuvolari WAS in USA, to see if he could get a ride for the 1938 Indianapolis 500 (broke the gearbox, so no race) but he started the race, as the flagman.
But since Offenhauser was making the fastest race engines back then, and Nuvolari was one (if not the) most successfull race drivers, it would be very logical that they met up.

It looks like a staged publicity shot.

I must say I'm skeptical. Most photos of Nuvolari without a helmet show him with a centre parting and straight hair and I think his chin is longer than the guy in the photos. The guy in the photo has wavy hair.

Also, by 1938 I think that engine had been much further developed. I think the photos are early 30s.
