Out for a tootle in the Singer tonight, going along a local A road, doing a very pleasant 45mph (in a 50 mph area). I know the road really well and am fully aware of a permanent speed camera along the road leading into Llangollen.
So, along we are going and come into view of the camera. Just about that time, a white audi came from behind at a fair old lick, over-taking me just before the camera which duly flashed at us.
Followed the now much slower audi into the town, we stopped at the lights so mrs wife took a quick snap of the number plate.
My dilema is..I know I was doing 45 when the camera flashed, will the camera have picked up both our speeds independently and more importantly will it have snapped him over-taking me?

I think that it is a very quick double flash which records your progress along the painted scale on the road surface, from which your speed can be accurately verified. It is a legal requirement to have a secondary measurement for speed. This is why at every Gatso speed camera location there are white lines painted on the road. The distance between each line represents 5mph so there can be no dispute over how fast you were driving. If there is any dispute over whether the radar technology captured the correct speed of the vehicle that was speeding the white lines are there as a secondary measurement.
So you should be in the clear. _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction

Yep that's how it works, I got caught overtaking a transit in my 911 years ago daft thing was that I knew the camera was there, I just got frustrated with an over laden transit doing an erratic 20- 25mph in a 40 mph !
Camera flashed twice, I saw the pics and was surprised they only clocked me at 65mph, however the letter that came through the post said " As the camera was being used for training purposes at the time, no further action would be taken, but it is the responsibility of all road users to drive responsibly" phew
So to give you some comfort Kev, they need to provide 2 timed photo's, so you will be fine.

In a speeding incident in which I was involved. Which I queried. The Police sent me copies of the TWO photos taken by the speed camera. There was a half second time lapse between the two photos and the distance travelled in the half second could be determined by the number of lines painted on the road that the car had moved in the half second.
An easy calculation revealed that the printed speed was wrong! I challenged the claimed speed and never heard any more about it.
I think in your case. If the camera took two photos the difference between the speeds of your and the other vehicle will be obvious and you probably have no need to worry.
By the way. 60mph is 88ft/sec. So obviously 50MPH will be 88 divided by 6 and multiplied by5/second. Or half that in half a second.

As the Audi overtook before the camera, did you see it flash after you passed the camera or as you approached it? Gatso cameras are rear facing, Truvelo cameras work in both directions.
Why did your wife want a photo of the Audi's registration? _________________ David

So not a Gatso then Kev, the flash gun and lens would have been facing the other way to get you after you passed. _________________ David

When my modern was stolen a few years ago, the thieves fitted it with number plates copied from a same model and colour car . In the week that they had my car, the low life had driven off without paying for fuel, and gone through several speed cameras at speed.
So the poor owner of the car who's number plate had been cloned, received a visit from the police for not paying for petrol, followed by a number of speeding summons through the post
Fortunately for him my car was recovered with the cloned plates on, so it was all cleared up, I do wonder where he would have stood had my car not been found?
