... and some of the values seem a bit weird: £2m for a Bentley R-type Continental sounds a bit rich, whilst £1m for a C-Type Jag is either very cheap (if it's a genuine one) or way, way over the top!
Either way, Mr Hull hopes to sell as one job lot and for the collection to stay together. I can't see it happening: as a complete collection it is going to be a millstone round someone's neck, whilst looking at his list of likely buyers, I can't see any of them doing anything but asset stripping the valuable cars and dumping the rest! |

Never mind about the Jags, I spy saloon and convertible versions of the Austin Atlantic, Somerset and Hereford (Hereford convertibles are super rare) in that collection! _________________ Richard Hughes |

| I like to have a collection of vehicles but don't you think this is a little too far. I wonder how many of them he ever actually drives? |

Go on then, Rick, how many is "quite a few more"?
How many vehicles do people think you could get use and enjoyment out of, without just leaving them parked up gathering dust? I reckon the practical limit, even given unlimited space, time and funds, would be around the half dozen mark, but sadly I haven't got the practical experience to back that up... |

Hasn't John Haynes recently rehoused his collection of over 400 cars and bikes in Somerset? I never hear anyone calling him 'greedy'. _________________ David

In my ideal situation, with this gent's funds behind me, I'd accumulate a variety of interesting and unusual vehicles, and put them into an active museum open to the public - ie a museum that sees many, if not all, vehicles in running order, with a view to having a random selection available to take out each year to events and use

100Million? Surely not! But in the present climate there can't be many better places for him to put his money.
Glorious collection and clearly chosen with his heart before his head. I am fascinated by the large scale aircraft and I have heard it said that some of them were manufacturers promotion and development models.
Doesn't bother me that he doesn't drive many of them. At least they are being preserved to be enjoyed in the future.
How many cars is 'enough?' Interesting question but I would agree with the notion that half a dozen or so would ideal, assuming we're talking ready runners. If you start to include projects and 'round tuits' I am already past that number! |

Dr. James Hull made his money in cosmetic dentistry, and the collection isn't quite what you might imagine. His Jaguars regularly win the JDC concours, but the XKSS was only built a few years back on an Australian new shell. Yes, it's a correct car that cost about £400,000 but not a real one where you'd add another zero and then some. He has chassis #21 E-type roadster amongst others.
The collection, as far as I understand it, has been sold to Mr. Tata and not Jaguar, but then perhaps I am misinformed. It would make sense though in that there are over 500 cars of all descriptions and buying through Jaguar might have tax advantages. The rumour though is that the collection will mostly go to India to form a museum there. Roll on the Hindustan! |
