Saw an immaculate one on Minchinhampton Common the other day. I couldn't believe it, haven't seen one since the sixties. |

I wondered if you intended a pun Rick, because air-cooled obviously need a good fan or impeller as i think they are called.
Me of course...goes without saying but I will at teh risk of boring you...Fiat 500.. |

I've owned a Type 2 van, a Marathon Beetle and a 1303 Beetle, loved every one and would happily have another Beetle today but for lack of garage space. _________________ David

Saw this one a couple on months ago in a Cardiff supermarket....great!
still wished I had kept my old Beetle - could not afford to keep it at the time - the usual story!

Family where Beetle owners in SA.
They where the only cars that didn't have problems in winter after a night of minus temp, where other cars' radiators would freeze and we would find them at the side of the road with steam coming out their engine bays.
There was a section of road that had a dip in it that flooded when we had a typical Transvaal cloudburst, and the ONLY cars that could navigate this where Beetles.
Very smug where we.
Used my 105E to get a 1500cc engine for my brother, straight swop for his 1200 and a big performance improvement.
Couldn't believe the acceleration.
He & I used to dice quite frequently, he keeping up with my mildly tuned Anglia with no problem.
I had a Combi for use with my business, the centre seats removed to make a load area.
I loved driving both, and nearly bought a Beetle a few years ago.
Wish I did now, but I do have three to rejuvenate.
Three score and ten months means I need to pull finger on the three cars I do have.

| Can we include Porsche 911s as air-cooled four-wheelers? If so, yes. |

My second car was a VW Beetle, a 1960 model.
My wife had an NSU Prinz 1000 in 1969 and kept it for 8 years. A cracking car with possibly the best gear change that I have ever come across. It also had the best design of clutch I have found. You could change it from the top and replace the friction plate in approximately 25 minutes. Brilliant design. Why has nobody copied it? She followed this with a Daf 46 Estate that we kept in the family for 18 years.
I also bought a Citroen Visa Special with the 652cc flat twin engine as a car for local deliveries for my company. What a cracker of a little car. I loved driving it.
Nothing wrong with air cooled engines. I always hoped to have a Chevrolet Corvair one day. _________________ Keep Torqueing,

The Datsun Cherry 100A had exactly that design, there was an inspection cover on top of the bell housing (transverse FWD)
and a little plate on the inner wheel arch where you removed the release bearing through..... |
