photo taken today at Hebden bridge of a 'bull nose morris'

is the gear drive on the wheel for the speedo? if not, what is it for?

Yes, indeed, that's the speedo drive. Early cars did not have speedos as standard, so there was no gear drive off the gearbox or rear axle.

When I first saw the above I thought they were an electronic speedo drive, It seems that every time something new comes out it has already been done before though maybe for a different purpose.

I suppose you could say that learning, at last, what speed you were going enabled you to avoid skidding by warning you of the increased risk levels; thus it does do a similar job even if it isn't autonomous. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy
