There are so many unknowns in every sphere of life with the possible independence from the UK looming. I wonder whether the concessions we currently enjoy for our old cars would continue?
Come to that, we might find things like MOTs, road tax and insurance for our normal cars heading in a diffrent direction.
Does anyone have any information on this?

Well given the independents don't have a clear plan on what currency will be adopted, I doubt that classics would have had any consideration !

Wonder if they will create a Scottish version of VOSA and the DVLA?

It doesn't seem to be a priority issue: http://www.yesscotland.net/answers?text=&issue=All

Good point.......
Maybe I'm over thinking it; unlike the politicians who don't really seem to have thought about it at all.

Not only will it depend on the outcome of the 'yes/no' vote, if it is to be a yes, and Mr Salmond decides to make himself King Alec 1st, then we also join Europe, we may be subjected to their restrictions on historic vehicles, driving licences and the like.
Depressing thoughts.................

No one has mentioned registrations yet. Will independence mean that all the "S" registrations issued to imports will be recalled and that all cars now living in Scotland will be issued with new national plates? Naturally, since most things seem to be free in Scotland (nursing homes, prescriptions etc.) there will be no road tax at all. And you'll all be running on kipper oil!

The currency issue may be impossible to solve for those who fancy being independent but I can't see the retention of existing registrations being a problem and of course when vehicles with the current registration structure become "classics" there is no geographic linkage.

Back to the point, I do not think initially there will be a lot of change, there will be many other unanswered questions of far greater importance to be answered before the question of a few thousand, no MOT or free tax historic vehicles on the road. I suppose the question we should be asking, should Scotland become independent, and stay/rejoin Europe depending on your view, then what may happen as I have said, the UK enjoys many dispensations from European wide motoring laws, for example, we have a different driving licence requirement for three-wheelers, we can tow a vehicle on a draw bar/frame behind another vehicle, that is exempt from the weight/braked restrictions placed on trailers, and much more.
On a different subject, to bring home the power Scotland has already, the proposals to reduce the drink/driving limit are well underway, and look to be introduced in the near future, drink a pint when you drive, or abstain completely, if you live in Berwick or Carlisle, be careful if you cross the border, with the new proposals, even residue alcohol from the night before would see you over the limit.

Just so! We are currently under the control of reformed alcoholic so it matters little to him that others are perfectly capable of dealing 1.5 pints without going on a bender be that drinking or wing modifying.

We get the governments we deserve. If you are not prepared to take on the responsibility of political control yourself then you're stuck with what you get.

Given that classic car owners tend to be the more affluent voters, and the last thing any new / independent party would want to do, would be to isolate that community, I'd bet you lot north of the border have little to fear ( classic wise) what ever happens.
