I have just come back from Cape Town, and I couldn't believe the number of really tidy Mk1 Golfs that were around......until someone pointed out that they only stopped making them in South Africa a few years ago Shocked

It must be 30 years since they were available new in the UK, got me wondering what other cars got an extended lease of life ?

I'm thinking of stuff like various Morris Oxford designs appearing as the Hindustan Ambassador, the Hunter became the Peykan in, I think, Iran. I believe the FE Victor and Rover SD1 were also revitalised elsewhere.

Playing us at our own game the Lada recycled the old Fiat design of course, and there was a Daewoo that looked like a Mk2 Astra that had been left in the paint oven a bit too long.

But all of those have been renamed into something else in a different market, of course. The VW Bus stuck around for a long time, and the Beetle.

Not a car but there are a lot of Chinese copies of early 70s/80s Honda motorcycles doing the rounds at the moment.

One of the Fiat 500 successor the 126 was turned into a Polish car Polski Fiat 126. and also produced in Yuogslavia as a Zastava
The Panda was turned into a Yugo wasn't it? There was certainly some other sort of Fiat from there
The Renault 8s and 12s became a Dacias.
SEATs were Fiats did lots of different Fiat before they became part of VAG.

Autocar magazine had a bit on this subject and they reckoned that the Morgan 4/4 at 78 years is essentially the same car as the 1936 iteration.

I believe that the Morris Minor was intended to be superseded in 1956. In fact it ran until 1971 in the 1000 guise.

I am sure we all remember BMC. Well its very much alive in Turkey. And there are lot of BMC Trucks bombing around the TRNC.

Turkey also made cars based on the Fiat 124 and called the Murat 131 built by Tofas.

The Ford Model B went out of production in America in 1933 but it lasted until 1935 here, and in South America, Brazil I believe it went on until the late 30's
The Simca Vedette was produced in Brazil until the late 60's. It was still using the small V8 that appeared in the U.K. in late 35 and continued until 39. Later Brazilian versions of this engine had O.H.V. and the power was up to 120 B.H.P.

The early 60,s Alfa Romeo 2.6 was produced in Brazil for a long time,I believe as a "Willys"
The Borgward 6-cylinder was also produced somewhere else after Borgward in Germany went belly up.Might also have been Brazil.
VW Beetles were built in Mexico,Brazil,and several other places long after German assembly finished.
BMC 1500 models were produced in Australia as the "Lancer" for some time,though with quite a lot of mods to make the car look bigger than it was.

One of the most obvious and no one has yet mentioned, the mini, in production from 1959 untill 2000.
The mini clubman was meant to replace the basic round nose in the late 60s but the round nose soldiered on whilst the clubman was discontinued in the beginning of the 80s, then the metro was launched, also meant as a replacement to the original mini but the mini saw the demise of the metro whilst it remained in production, basically with very little alterations to the original ones built in the late 50s.

Couple of days ago I saw a traditional VW campervan and thought it seemed in remarkable condition. Then saw the reg number and it was a 59 (ie 2009) plate. Has someone started making them again?
