|
|
Hello there,
Its a long shot but I thought I'd see if you can possibly help
me. I have been given a home made trailer with no wheels! It has been made out of vintage car parts and nobody knows anything about its origin.
I have been searching for some time and getting nowhere looking for a stud mounted 3 hole wheel of unknown hub of vintage.
So I need to identify the three stud mounting, the PCD is 120mm or 4 3/4" and from stud centre to stud centre measures about 105mm
and the bore in the middle would be around 60.3mm or 2 3/8".
Thanks for any suggestions you can provide.
Dan
* OKAY I've put up a new post to identify the axle with photos - probably a better way to go

Dan, I stand to be corrected but I have an idea that the Citroen 2CV had such an arrangement.

the 2CV has a PCD of 160 according to the internet - that's a shame as somebody is selling 4 for £25 on Gumtree |

There is a thread with regards three stud wheels somewhere else on the forum.
My DLM front wheels are three stud, 1935 Standard 9. got a photo with measurements on it somewhere
The DLM is often mistaken for an Austin 7 special because of the three stud front hubs.
Hillman had three stud as well
Morris also.
Is the axle one piece if so a photo might help.
I presume you have the hubs, silly question I know, but even a photo of the hubs and back plates might jog some grey cells. |

The photo's are a good idea - I'll try to get somebody to take some photo's by the weekend. The axle is from the front and somebody has welded plates to the kingpins to stop them from from turning. I'm not sure if the hubs and drums are original but I'll put some photo's up... |

My mother had a post war Standard 8 and I well remember one of it's wheels flying off across an adjoining field. We collected it, put it with the car and someone offered us a lift home. Shortly after we arrived the RAC man turned up to tell us he'd put the wheel back on. Apparently he kept a stock of wheel nuts for Standard 8s because there were only three and they often came off.
My mum clung to box, it was an ES2 with a box sidecar he took her to get it. |

Got three stud wheels on the DLM.
Not fallen off yet in 55 years.
Seen HGV wheels with 10 studs fall of a few times. |

Dan,
Just been out in my workshop with your dimensions for a 3 stud wheel. Everything seems to match for a mid/late 1920's Morris Cowley wheel. These are Dunlop pressed steel artillery spoked wheels.
The tyre size is 4.50 x 19 or 5.00 x 19 which gives an overall diameter of around 30" (Clearance required for mudguards)
(nb, Morris COWLEY, not Morris OXFORD which uses a five stud wheel.)

Hi Keith, thanks for checking that out - much appreciated.
The only thing is I'm not going find let alone to buy some wheels without an IMF loan! unless some other wheel will fit.
Here is some pictures maybe you might will recognise the drum or axle as a Morris COWLEY part.

Dan,
The first two photos are definitely mid/late twenties Morris Cowley. Mine is 1928 and they're the same.

Keith, googling I found this link:
http://www.mmoc.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=44719
The photos are similar to mine except the shoe mechanism that has gears - mine has none.
I guess the gears are a later innovation or something.
Nevertheless as you say it is a Morris Cowley. |
