Now here is an interesting, admittedly, philosophical question!
You have just won the Lottery: say Euro Lottery and £50,000,000. (OK; Most people possessed of much of a brain and the ability to compute odds and chance stand no chance as they don't waste their hard earned dosh!
What cars would you really love to see in your collection?
My personal Picks:
Aston Martin DB4 GT:
Jaguars: (note plural!): XK 120, 150 s, both dropheads. MK II 3.8 Manual. MK V, Drophead. E Type, Series 1/12 Drophead (4.2 L, flared in headlights).
Austin Healey 3000, MK 11.
Mini Cooper s MK II, 1275.
MG Twin Cam.
TR3A.
Bentley Continental Convertible Series III, bodywork by Mulliner Park Ward.
Ferrari Dino 246 GT.
Riley 1.5.
Alvis TF21 Drophead, Graber.
Alvis Speed 25 Drophead (My late father owned one of these!).
Well, this will do to start with!
As a point of reference, in the mad past I have owned or worked, significantly, on all of these cars and just wish I had saved most of them! _________________ Well, apart from that, did you enjoy the play, Mrs Lincoln?

Wow... What a thread, it is like my whole life flashed before my eyes!
Get the gold card out quick before justifying my choices turns into a curse.
Mini Cooper S. Fiesta yellow please, with a black roof and all the period extras including one of those chrome fire extinguishers with a BMC rosette logo on.
'66 Mustang convertible. Not a red or black one, otherwise you pick the spec.
One more American, a big, big ragtop from the 40's, straight eight engine - 4-5 seats and no fins thanks.
Now, an E type or a Healey? The Healey has it by a whisker, especially if it's a MK3.
Triumph Dolomite. No panic to find a Sprint, an 1850HL will do fine.
Range Rover, earlier the better. All plastic interior is a must, at last I will be able to wear my green wellies and a Barbour jacket!
Volvo 245 GLT. My daily shopper. If it's good enough for the CEO of IKEA it's good enough for me!
So, nothing exotic then? No, but even if did win the jackpot I can still see myself with a brace of every day classics to be bought, sold or restored on a whim. A Herald, A40, Renault 4, Marina, MG Metro etc etc.. |

Oh dear!
Two cars and that's £30,000,000 gone.
If one was a Ferrari 250 GTO and the other was a D Type Jag!

I would go into shock!
But once recovered;
Jag Mk.2 with wire wheels natch, and updated.
Fiat 600 Abarth - Always loved those open rear lids.
Keep my existing three.
Geoff - Too cold for Workshop today. _________________ Too many hobbies, not enough time!

Initially I'd make sure that my existing cars were all brought up to scratch, that wouldn't make much of a dent in a £50mil win admittedly.
Then I'd go looking for a suitable car to put in the back of the Dodge, one in particular springs to mind, and the Sphinx Allard that once resided in the back of the Commer would also be tracked down.
Then, in no particular order:
Jaguar Mk1 3.4, BRG, painted wires.
Mini Cooper S.
Ecurie Ecosse Commer, and cars, assuming the new owner could be persuaded to part with them.
Then find a suitable home with accommodation for a large fleet, ideally with a test track in the grounds. The vehicle accommodation would be set up as a museum, so that the great unwashed including clubs could use the venue for meets and so on.
A small collection of 1950s jets would also be displayed in the grounds, while around the perimeter there'd be a full-size railway track and at least one steam loco to use it, plus a Victorian-era station at which to pull up at and be served teas.

OK, I shall refine my statement to one of everything that costs less than 500K. I've never been impressed by "flash" cars anyway! _________________ Mike,

This kind of post crops up from time to time all over the place. I've had a Mini Cooper 1293 much modified by Alexander in the day and loved it so would have another, but now in my dotage perhaps a Wood and Pickett variety. More comfort for these ageing bones.
I remember the day I drove 62 EMU, the DB3S that twice finished second at Le Mans, and would like it please.
My first choice above any other car though would be an Invicta Low Chassis. I had a ride in one and was amazed how good it was for its age.
But if we are talking of pre-war, then it would also include an Alfa 8C of course. The engine noise is something I'll never forget.
But I've had my fill of Jaguars; I've still got my flat floor after all these years, I have a good XKSS replica, would love to own the Ecurie Ecosse 1957 long nose winner but not too fussed, and if there's anything else I'd like back it would be my BSA Gold Star and Venom Thruxton. Oh, and perhaps a period Metisse. (Could you see that name getting past the PC people today?)
As you can see, I am quite a tightwad! |

Well, at least you could then afford a nice centrally heated garage, with en suite shower and Jacuzzi!

Interestingly, Rick, an acquaintance from France, a Brit videographer, photographer and journalist on motor sport areas (and occasional driver of racing cars) and topics was working as a consultant on a project to do precisely this with an old dilapidated Chateau and estate in France. My chum was rather keen on the test rack concept, running thru the rambling forests, lakes and grounds for a mile or so! I could share his enthusiasm! When bored, take a collectible race car from the museum and blast it around the track, to err, well, keep it in good fettle!
I must email him and see if it ever actually happened.??? _________________ Well, apart from that, did you enjoy the play, Mrs Lincoln? |
