What was that from Peter?
An Austin Champ could travel as fast in reverse as it could forward but not at 130 mph! _________________ Starting Handle Expert

That's feet per minute (x ten), so only 15mph! |

It's an Air Ministry instrument, so presumably some kind of tug for moving aircraft on the ground?
edit: although why would that require a trip reading? |

Might be a Hobbs (hours) meter rather than a mileometer. I wondered about a glider winch, but 15mph would be too slow for that. |

Don't know about the trips but perhaps similar to this? Helicopters perhaps?
Peter
Or, perhaps something like this?

Peter,
Helicopters would have the standard type of VSI as shown in your second picture. Apart from having very limited maxima, the first instrument would be far too busy to scan while flying, particularly when flying on instruments alone.

Yes, I'm coming round to Mike's suggestion.

The Pyrene MkVl airfield fire engine with Wilson box could travel as fast in reverse as forward due to a change direction transfer box. Tugmaster aircraft tugs only had a Wilson box with standard reverse - both with Rolls Royce power. The MkVl also fell over if swerved to miss a camel on the runway & the surge in the water tank took over. Pedalling up the tug in a morning to adjust the gearbox bands took 100 presses of the gear change pedal - that's why tug drivers had big calves(at least in one leg) Cheers,JD. _________________ 1958 Ford Zephyr Mk2 Convertible
