Do it online, just need the v5 reference number.
They don't even check your insurance details apparently, just comes up with confirmation that the vehicle has a current mot ( I did my daughters car last night)

Hi

If you buy it, you can tax it either online or on your phone, using the reference number on the green slip that you as the buyer keep (V5C/2 I think it is) - not the reference on the front of the logbook.

Is that reference number different to the one on the front Rick?

It was when I tried to tax the Disco over the phone. The ref on the front cover of the V5C (different number of digits iirc) wouldn't work, the one on the green slip did though - it has an extra digit at the beginning from memory.

I taxed my daughters car late thursday night, it was previously on sorn and went through ok, not sure how it is if you are not the registered owner as named on the v5. Perhaps thats what the extra digit rick mentions is for?

It's 24 hour and really simple, either by automated/IVR phone or online Smile ...one thing the DVLA have got right!

OK, thanks for that, but what about insurance?
There aren't many insurance offices open on Sunday afternoon!

When you insure your car it must put a marker on the DVLA data base because the police know if the car is taxed, insured and MOTd if applicable when they do their ANPR checks.

I understand that Art, but there is no way to insure a new purchase outside office hours, so if I buy a car over a weekend, I still cannot bring it home until it's insured, unless I'm missing something here?

hi
I used the online system on the 22Jan to sign for a 6 month DD (it is £6+ cheaper than paying on the debit card) on my daily driver for tax starting today.
They haven't taken the money out yet so I am running around with a copy of their acknowledgement email just in case I get stopped.

The useless DVLA have also failed so far to get my age 73 licence renewal done after I sent in my medical form D4 and application (necessary if you wish to keep your acquired categories such as D1 and C1 etc) in early November for a Jan 5th expiry.
So I am also carrying a copy of their email stating that I can continue driving using the provisions in sect 88 of the Road Traffic act..

DVLA is about as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

I don't think you are missing anything; the only thing that has changed is that an insurance check is not required to tax a vehicle, but if you can't insure a vehicle , you can't drive it, just as it has always been.

It'd be handy if there was a way to invoke a basic, say third-party, insurance at the time of taxing a new purchase at odd times of the day/week, until such time as you could swap your main policy across to the new car. Maybe even a time-limited basic policy, to cover the homeward trip.

Rick
The real problem with insurance is that now we have a continuous insurance requirement we can't transfer without taking out a new policy for the old car.
Driving instructors wanting to sell their old car privately can't do it till after taking delivery of their new car, and of coures the same applies to anyone who doesn't want to be without transport during a change of vehicle period.
