A few of these slogans go back to the early days of motoring, others are much more recent. Some were used briefly while others are almost synonymous with the marque. All refer to cars on the British market but not necessarily British made. How many can you name without asking Mr. Google?
Don't post the answers as that would spoil it for others. I will post the answers next week.

Very good, Ronnie!

There are one or two there that I don't recognise at all, and several that I can answer straight away... but most of them leave me thinking 'I know that, but what the h**l is it?' Shocked

RonnieJ's answers, originally posted into a new thread but I think it might be better here:

---------------------------

As promised here are the answers to the slogan quiz. I had included a few modern ones for the benefit of younger Forum members but it is clear from the suggestions made that the readership is well acquaint with older slogans.

1. ALBION. (Early Albions had this phrase embossed on the radiator later ones had a representation of a sunrise on the front.

2. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY
A motoring journalist described an early Armstrong Siddeley "as silent and inscrutable as the sphinx". This description appealed to Colonel J D Siddeley who adopted the Sphinx as a radiator mascot.)

3. SKODA (After the VW takeover when they were trying to lose the poor image.)

4. SUNBEAM: It appears their target market was the wealthy sporting types.)

5. FORD (Used for the launch of the first Cortina in 1962.)

6. BMW

7. MG (This goes back to the very early days and is a play on the slogan “Safety First”. It is said that the original slogan was “Faster than most” but Cecil Kimber tired of seeing the word “Bicycles” being added by jokers.

8. HYUNDAI

9. ALPHA ROMEO

10. STANDARD: (When selling abroad a company must consider what the product name may mean in another country. When the Vanguard was marketed in America in the late ‘40s it was discovered that “standard” meant “basic” to most Americans. However, this slogan goes back to the ‘20s.)

11. ROVER

12. FIAT (Used for the Strada initially showing robots working to a backing track of fast Italian opera music and finishing with6 cars loading onto a moving car transporter.)Check out U-tube

13. AUSTIN

14. TOYOTA (This slogan is regarded as an all-time great by the advertising industry.)

15. SINGER ( A bit sexist by today’s standards: did women’s opinions not count?)

16. MAZDA

17. SAAB (More of a joke than a slogan but very firmly associated with the brand now.)

18. JAGUAR (PRE-WAR)

19. HONDA

20. VOLKSWAGEN: (VW are noted for their imaginative ads which were sometimes presented in monochrome for effect. Two stick in my mind: The first is an angry young woman dumping all the expensive gifts received from her ex-boyfriend. She dumps a fur coat and jewelry but stops before she drops the keys of her Golf down a drain. The other is the classic Beetle ad that answers the age old question of how a snowplough driver gets to work. ) Check out U-tube
